Agentic ERP in September 2026: What Is Available, in Preview, and Still a Date

On 23 September 2026, at Directions for Enterprise in Copenhagen, Microsoft published "Build the future of agentic ERP with new Microsoft Dynamics 365 capabilities." The post, by Sameer Verma, is a snapshot of what is new and what is coming through March 2027. It is also the moment Microsoft said release waves are no longer the planning surface. New Dynamics 365 capabilities go to the AI at Work roadmap. Existing release-plan pages stay up as history.

That split matters if you are about to tell a steering committee that "the new financial journals" or "the Finance Agent" arrive with the September 10.0.49 update. Some of the announcement is in the product. A larger share is in preview or still worded in the future tense. This note separates the two, using Microsoft's own dates.

Generally available, and fair to plan on

These are the items the 23 September post states as generally available.

CapabilityWhat Microsoft said is available
Business Performance Planning demo data and starter kitRevenue, workforce, operating expense, capital expenditure, and allocation scenarios, so a planning model can be stood up from sample data
France e-invoicing and e-reportingSupport is generally available. In Finance 10.0.49, electronic reporting of transactions for France is still a Feature management feature, so "generally available" here means you can enable it, not that it is mandatory
Dynamics 365 ERP plugin for Copilot CoworkAgents can work with ERP data, actions, and attachments. Copilot responses can carry citations and deep links back to the ERP record
Dynamics 365 ERP MCP serverSame statement: generally available, with citations and deep links

The first-party ERP MCP server is Microsoft's product. It is not the same thing as a custom server you build over OData. If you already run your own, read An MCP Server for Dynamics 365 Finance and Operations for the boundary questions that do not go away because Microsoft shipped one: which actions an agent may take, how company context is chosen, and how a citation maps back to a voucher a controller can open.

Two controls in that same section are still ahead of the product, and the post uses future tense for both. Business skills — reusable process context for agents, including procure-to-pay — are how the foundation "will further expand," with access managed through Dynamics 365 security roles. Additional role-based restrictions, so a person acting through Copilot Cowork or an agent can be limited beyond the rights they have in the client, "will allow" that tighter control. Neither sentence says the control is enforced in 10.0.49. Confirm both on the AI at Work roadmap before they go into a security design.

Demand planning gets a shorter, earlier claim. Generative insights for seasonality, trends, and signal correlations, plus external signals such as inflation, pricing, and weather, have been generally available since August 2026. AI-generated explanations of forecast drivers are described as following, not as shipped on 23 September.

Public preview, including pieces that land in 10.0.49

Preview means an administrator can turn it on, and Microsoft can still change it.

Invoice capture enhancements are public preview in September 2026, with no general-availability date on the release plan, and the plan says the preview is in 10.0.49. The release plan also says some of that functionality may not have been released. Scope it as three changes, because that is all Microsoft specified:

  • AI derivation of the invoice header against purchase orders and procurement categories, using vendor data, with later invoices picking up corrections a user made.
  • A side-by-side view of invoice lines, the invoice PDF, and the purchase order, so matching exceptions do not require three screens.
  • Recognition of header-level and line-level charges, allocated by rule when the invoice transfers into Finance, so the invoice total is less likely to disagree with the posted charges.

Line-level derivation of the invoice itself is explicitly future work. Do not demo it as part of this preview.

Procurement agent impact analysis is public preview. It traces a supplier-proposed purchase-order change through to affected sales orders, production orders, transfer orders, and projected inventory. The test is a proposed date or quantity change on one line, then a check that each of those four downstream objects either appears or is correctly absent.

Supplier Engagement is public preview in the same announcement, and Supply Chain Management 10.0.49 lists (Preview) Supplier Engagement in Feature management. The scope Microsoft named is onboarding, requests for quotation, purchase orders, and invoicing, in a workspace and a supplier portal, across legal entities. Pilot it with one supplier and one legal entity. A portal that spans every vendor in every company is a data-exposure project, not a feature toggle.

Scheduling Operations Agent in Field Service is public preview. Dispatchers review proposed changes before they are applied. Recurring scheduled optimizations are described as still coming.

Field Service work orders created from, or linked to, project tasks are generally available, as are mobile notes with text, images, and video on the work order. Those two are not finance features, and they are the cleanest "available now" lines in the operational half of the post.

In development, with dates after this upgrade

The financial journal re-engineering is the item most likely to be mis-scheduled.

Message center RM571847, published 18 September 2026, status in development, gives the dates the product blog does not. Preview is March 2027. General availability is December 2027. The 23 September post is consistent with that distance. It says the journal experience "is being re-engineered," and that teams "will be able to" view intercompany transactions, create accruals, and preview allocations before posting. It does not say those screens are in 10.0.49.

What the message center says the journals will do, once they exist:

  • Customer and ledger account types on the new journal.
  • Import, and review errors, without going to the Data management workspace.
  • Preview intercompany and intracompany accounting, accruals, and allocations before posting.
  • Related documents for tracing a transaction.
  • Advanced tax calculation where the tax scenario applies.
  • Future-period accruals that no longer post by themselves, so a future period does not have to stay open for the accrual to be recorded.

Prerequisites called out in that message: optimized financial dimensions and the Ledger posting rules framework. If those are not already in your design, the journal project starts there, not in a UI review. Nothing in 10.0.49's Finance feature table is this journal framework. Keep the current journal test plan for the October auto-update, and put March 2027 on the roadmap review.

The same post describes other work as coming, not present:

  • Account Reconciliation Agent evolving toward bulk exception resolution, scoped by legal entity and module, with limits, notifications, and longer suggestion summaries.
  • Finance Agent skills for reconciliation, data preparation, variance analysis, collections, and business intelligence, surfaced in Copilot, Excel, Outlook, and Teams.
  • Accounts payable automation continuing toward more touchless invoice capture and suggested finance entries. The concrete preview is the invoice-capture list above, not a new AP module.
  • Dynamic item placement in the warehouse, and rental management, both described as upcoming. Rental management is "coming to public preview," covering quote, contract, inspection, return, and billing.
  • The next phase of Brazil's tax reform, on the roadmap. France is the localization Microsoft called generally available.

Project Operations change-order management is "coming to public preview." Subscription billing's recurring schedules, invoice generation, and tiered pricing are "up next." Recognizing project revenue against the original cost estimate, and the time-phased staffing view, are stated as things organizations can do. They are not given a build number in the post. Confirm each on the roadmap before you move a revenue policy.

How to talk about this in a release review

Use three labels and refuse a fourth.

  • In 10.0.49 now. The Finance and Supply Chain feature tables, including Supplier Engagement as preview and the invoice-capture preview the release plan ties to this build. See what to regression-test before the October auto-update.
  • Generally available outside the PU. Business Performance Planning starter data, France e-invoicing and e-reporting, the ERP plugin for Copilot Cowork, and the Dynamics 365 ERP MCP server.
  • Dated later. Financial journals, preview March 2027 and general availability December 2027, per RM571847.

The fourth label — "the September announcement, so it ships with the September update" — is the one that creates a false test plan. The announcement is a six-month look ahead. The update is build 10.0.2790. They overlap. They are not the same list.
